Asterisk Inbound Press Digit to Continue

What is the Inbound Routes Module used for?

When a call comes into your system from the outside, it will usually arrive along with information about the telephone number that was dialed (also known as the "DID") and with the Caller ID of the person who called.

The Inbound Routes Module is used to tell your FreePBX/Asterisk system what to do with calls that come into your system on any trunk that has the "context=from-trunk" parameter in the PEER details.

The Inbound Routes module works together with most of the other Modules in FreePBX.  Calls come into your system on Trunks that are configured in the Trunks Module.  The Inbound Routes Module then tells FreePBX/Asterisk where to send these calls.  Calls can be sent to a variety of destinations, including an Extension, a Ring Group, a Queue, an IVR, a Time Condition, a Feature Code, a DISA, a Conference, etc., all of which are configured in their own Modules.

How Do I Get to the Inbound Routes Module?

To access the Inbound Routes Module in FreePBX 2.10 and later, access the graphical user interface using a web browser.  Click on the "Connectivity" pull down menu at the top and then select "Inbound Routes".

To access the Inbound Routes Module in FreePBX 2.9 and earlier, access the graphical user interface using a web browser.  Click on the "**" option on the left, and then click on "**."

What Do Each of Inbound Route Options Mean?

After you select the route you want to modify (or that you want to create a new route), you'll be brought a new screen that lists the configuration options that are used for a Route.  You can get a general description of what each option does by placing your mouse on the question mark to the right of the option (in FreePBX 2.10 and higher) or on the text of the option (in FreePBX 2.9 and earlier), and a tooltip will appear that explains the option.  Make the changes that you desire, then scroll to the bottom, click "Submit Changes," and then click the red "Apply Config" bar at the top of the screen.

<Bellcore-dr1> - Usually a normal ring.

<Bellcore-dr2> - Usually a double-ring.

<Bellcore-dr3> - Usually a triple-ring.

Click the "Submit Changes" button at the bottom of the screen to save the Route, and then the red "Apply Config" button at the top to have your changes put into effect by FreePBX/Asterisk.

Note that "Apply Config" will NOT terminate any existing calls.

Sample Route Configurations:

Listed below are some sample configurations that you might want to include in your Inbound Routes.

1.  DeadRestricted

Without this route, Asterisk will answer any incoming calls that do not match another incoming route and play a disconnect recording.  Some people view this as a security risk, especially when combined with the "Allow Anonymous Inbound SIP Calls" option, because a hacker would be able to determine that he is dealing with an Asterisk system.  By adding this Inbound Route, incoming calls that don't match another route will simply be rejected.

Description:DeadRestricted

Set Destination: Teminate Call:  Hangup.

Leave all other fields blank.

2.  DID Number Route

This route will handle incoming calls to a particular phone number.  Change DIDNUMBER to the incoming phone number.

Description: Name the route however you like.  For DID routes, most people name the route using the telephone number.

DID Number:DIDNUMBER

Set Destination:   Use this field to choose where incoming calls that match the DID Number should go.

3.  SuperCaller

This route will handle calls from a specific Caller ID, and will take priority over any DID Number Route.  You might use such a Route to ensure that calls from the CEO's mobile phone always ring the entire office, instead of being routed to the front desk only, or to allow the CEO's spouse's calls to go straight to the CEO's extension.  You could also send problem callers directly to voicemail.

Description: Name the route however you like.  For DID routes, most people name the route using the telephone number.

DID Number:(Leave Blank, or fill in a DID if you prefer the Supercaller to only function when he calls one particular phone number)

CallerID Number:Enter the CallerID of the Caller who will receive priority

CID Priority Route:  Check this box only if you leave the DID Number field (above) blank.

Set Destination:   Use this field to choose where incoming calls from the SuperCaller should go.
